Close eye kept on Irina

The South African Weather Service said it would continue to monitor tropical storm Irina along South Africa’s eastern coast.

The storm reportedly left scores of homes damaged and more than 70 dead across the region, including five people who died in KwaZulu-Natal over the weekend.

Irina has been downgraded to a moderate tropical storm and is currently out at sea.

But she is expected to circle back towards the coast later this week.

Forecaster Elizabeth Webster said, “Even if she does not make it to land, she could still have an impact, especially in the north-eastern part of KwaZulu-Natal.”

Webster said Irina is not expected to intensify but the east coast could still experience more heavy rainfalls towards the weekend.
