Strong Solar Activity

Space Weather reports on the big sunspot AR1429 and a video from DH7FB shows a 144 MHz recording of a flare produced by the sunspot.

Solar activity is now high. Big sunspot AR1429, which emerged on March 2nd, is crackling with strong flares. The strongest so far, an X1-class eruption, occured Monday, March 5th at 0413 UT. The explosion also hurled a bright coronal mass ejection (CME) into space. The expanding cloud will probably deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field on March 6th or 7th. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras in the nights ahead.

This video presents an on air recording by amateur radio station Frank DH7FB with his 144 MHz EME array pointed towards the Sun. During the recording, Sunspot 1429 produced a long duration M2.0 solar flare and this is what he recorded. At 8 seconds into the on air recording, you can hear a sharp increase in background noise level which continues for a while until eventually returning to quieter levels.
