Adult male dies in fire in Khayelitsha

At 05:27 today, Tuesday 01 May 2012, a fire occurred at Koyo Crescent, Site B, Khayelitsha.

Two shacks were destroyed by the fire that left two people displaced.

One adult male died which identity has not been released died in the fire.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage and the SAPS have opened an inquest docket to investigate the incident.

The City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre appeals to residents to be careful when working with open flames.

When going to bed, residents should isolate electrical devices and extinguish gas burners, candles, lamps and paraffin stoves in order to prevent fires.

During winter months residents that are economic disadvantaged in informal settlements and residential areas are known to be at greater risk of fires, when they make open flame fires to keep warm and leaving it unattended that result in disastrous situations.
