Public caution to stay clear of Elephant Seal at Blouberg Beach

Yesterday morning an elephant seal came to shore at Table View opposite Doodles.

Accordingly to the City’s officials the marine mammal did not sustain any injuries and is resting.

The City wishes to advise the general public that this behaviour is normal for seals to come ashore to rest.

Since yesterday the marine mammal routinely moved along the shoreline of Table View and Blouberg, near Ons Huisie.

The Oceans & Coasts Branch of the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) has placed poles and rope in front of the animal to restrict people. However, it has been found that some members of the public do not cooperate, and cross the rope barrier. DEA has also placed a notice regarding elephant seals behaviour. The City’s Law Enforcement, as well as Nature Conservation, is monitoring the site.

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA has been alerted to be on standby should the marine mammal suffer any injuries.

An appeal is made to the general public not to interfere with the mammal as the sea animal can cause harm to a person.
