CAPE TOWN - More than a dozen helicopters belonging to the South African Police Service (SAPS) have been grounded for routine inspection, police confirmed on Monday.
Earlier in 2012, police rubbished claims that several choppers were grounded for due to a lack of funds to repair them.
The police service has a total of 37 helicopters.
Police spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said despite inspections, police have enough choppers in the sky to tackle crime effectively.
He said 22 choppers were available and insisted they were grounded only for routine inspection.
Mashigo said no provinces had been affected by the grounding of the force's other 15 helicopters.
