Cape heat wave to subside

Sizzling hot weather in parts of the Western Cape will subside by Thursday, the SA Weather Service said.

"We've had very warm conditions, with the Cape Town metropole reaching a high of 32 degrees today [Tuesday]," forecaster Gerrie Keyser said.

"This is the last day [of very hot weather] for the metropole [which] will cool to 27 degrees by Thursday."

Keyser said the West Coast and Karoo were experiencing a heat wave, with the mercury rising five degrees or more than the hottest recorded temperatures for the hottest month, February.

Redelinghuys on the West Coast was the warmest on Tuesday at 43 degrees.

Clanwilliam was a close second at 42 degrees.

Temperatures at Vredendal, Paarl, Oudtshoorn, Malmesbury, Worcester and Robertson were hovering between 38 and 40 degrees.

Keyser said temperatures in these areas would drop a few degrees by Thursday.

He warned of a very high chance of fires because of dry conditions and no rain.

Hot and bothered Capetonians used social networking site Twitter to comment on their so-called #capesauna weather.

User @mdsteinbach was too hot to care about crime, saying: "Door open window open fan on #capesauna hope my tv is still here when I wake up".

@zulu_poplet felt legislation was letting her down: "Why isn't there a law that says once the temperature hits 30degrees you can stop working and hit the beach?"

User @Reesiebabygirl took a more practical approach: "I drink faster on days like these coz I don't want my beer to get warm."

One disgruntled user, @Allwhere2 felt that tweeting Western Cape premier Helen Zille was the only solution.

"@helenzille: Concerned Cape Town resident: This heat is unconstitutional, do something."

Ever the politician, she replied: "@Allwhere2 perhaps airconditioning should be a constitutional right ;-)".
