[HEAVY RAINS LEAD TO WARNINGS – 18 JANUARY 2012]
Heavy rains have fallen over the Mpumalanga and Limpopo regions, which has caused many roads and bridges to be closed in most parts. ER24 has been on high alert since the heavy rains in the areas for any possible evacuations that they could assist with.
ER24 would like to give a few safety tips on what to do if you need to evacuate your home in case of a flooding.
• Firstly “DONT PANIC”
• Regardless of how a flood occurs, head for higher ground and stay away from flood water
• Stay away from flooded areas, it may look safe but the flood waters may still be rising
• Don’t walk, swim or drive through flood water
• If you are in a vehicle and it becomes surrounded by water, try and get out if it’s safe to do so immediately and get to higher ground.
• Never drive over a bridge when it is submerged under water.
• Do not walk near the river banks or storm water drainage systems; these may collapse in extreme conditions.
• If you get separated from your family, try and get to the nearest emergency service and inform them who you are and what happened to you. This will help reunite families at a later stage.
These are just a few things that can help in saving your life and many others. If you do get into trouble or have a medical emergency you can contact our National Emergency Contact Centre on 084 124.
