A fire has destroyed at least 27 informal settlements at Reservoir Hills in Durban.
It is believed the blaze started just before midnight, after last night's thunderstorm in the area.
Mohamed Ismail, who is a member of the Safety and Security Portfolio Committee in the area, has told Newswatch that around 70 people have lost their homes.
He says the shacks are located in the Pemary Ridge Informal Settlement, which is situated on the banks of the Umgeni River.
It is unclear what exactly caused the fire.
Mohamed says families, who lost their belongings, are being currently being housed in a tent that has been put up, while they wait for help.
"I've been there this morning, the situation is not looking good. The homes are destroyed, rubble is still being removed and you can even see smoke still filtering from the fire damage," said Mohamed.
