Johannesburg - A man and woman walking in ankle-deep water on a beach near Port Shepstone drowned when the sand gave way and they were washed out to sea, the NSRI said on Sunday.
Witnesses said the water in which the man and woman were walking around noon on Saturday suddenly became deeper, as if the sand had given way underneath them, National Sea Rescue Institute station commander at Shelly Beach, Mark Harlen, said in a statement.
Neither could swim. Police and NSRI volunteers helped to find them.
A sea and air search eventually found the body of the woman in the sea, about 10m from the beach. The body of the 27-year-old man washed up on the shore during the search.
The couple are believed to be from the Eastern Cape and police are trying to locate their relatives. An inquest docket was opened.
