Fire leaves 54 homeless in Taiwan informal settlement, Khayelitsha

At 14:38 on Saturday, 25 February 2012, a fire destroyed 15 informal structures at the Taiwan informal settlement, Section D, off Mew Way Road in Khayelitsha.

Firefighters and vehicles were dispatched to the scene of the incident upon receipt of the emergency call. The fire was swiftly contained and its impact was reduced thanks to the quick response of the City’s Fire and Rescue Services.

A total of 54 persons, including 17 males, 24 females and 13 children, were left homeless as a result of the fire. The rapid response teams from City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre were on the scene late Saturday afternoon to ensure that the victims were provided with humanitarian relief aid and social assistance.

The City will be providing building material to the households to rebuild their homes tomorrow, Sunday 26 February 2012, after the affected area has been cleared up.

The neighbours offered accommodation to the fire victims until tomorrow.

The City’s disaster response teams provided food parcels, blankets and clothing to the fire victims that lost all their personal belongings as a result of the fire.

No injuries were reported and all persons have been accounted for. The cause of the fire is unknown. Authorities will investigate the incident.
