KZN transport officials say they are prioritising the rebuilding of roads and bridges that have been damaged or destroyed during floods and storms across the province.
Reconstruction to the ruined infrastructure is set to cost them over R1-billion.
The Department says an audit by its engineers, dated from 2008 until the end of last year, found that the roads and bridges need immediate attention to avoid further damage.
Transport's Kwanele Ncalane says the areas that were most affected were Umzinyathi, uThungulu and Zululand.
He says they have already repaired 12 pedestrian bridges which collapsed, while a further three will be finished by the end of March.
Ncalane says, however, the department is experiencing a shortfall of more R874-million to attend to other repair projects.
"We've had to re-prioritise; the work is continuing on those [projects] which are key and strategic to the economy of the province, but we've had to look at our expenditure patterns and minimise in terms of other projects - which are going to be delayed."
