A woman was killed in a fire that gutted a flat in Pieterse Street near the Irving Steyn Street junction in South Crest, Alberton, late last night. Another man was in a critical condition after trying to save her from the blaze.
The cause of the incident and the series of events leading up to it remain unclear.
Common cause information indicates that a fire started in the apartment which is situated above retail stores. The flat is occupied by a family of four and woken by the smoke, a man managed to run from the burning building with his two children.
Netcare911 Paramedics arrived at the scene to find that his wife was trapped inside. Flames had overrun the building and firefighters were hard at work battling the fire. Sadly she was killed.
A man suffered severe smoke inhalation and was in a critical condition after attempting to enter the apartment to get her out. He was rushed by ambulance to the Natalspruit State Hospital for further urgent care.

The family of four all have survived as they were next to the flat that was in blazed with flames. The woman that has passed away is my Mother and she did not survive due to her being trapped in the Kitchen, her husband was not admitted to Hospital and was only treated for surface burns. It still remains unclear as to how the fire started.RIP (Mommy) Erica Fouche Steenkamp
