Highly toxic load on hijacked truck

Johannesburg - An interlink truck that was hijacked near Heidelberg is carrying a highly toxic load that looks like coffee, police said on Saturday.

The truck was hijacked at 20:20 on Friday on the Spook Bridge that crosses the N3 highway and was last seen heading towards Vosloorus, provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale said.

"The driver was cornered and forced to leave his cab at gunpoint," she said.

The load was about to be delivered to a nearby mine and is in canvas bags.

"We have been told that it looks and smells like instant coffee but under no circumstances should people consume it," said Mogale.

Police were worried the hijackers will try to pass the chemical off as coffee and sell it to unsuspecting consumers.

The white MAN truck has the letters KVE on its sides. The registration is BG22JVGP. Sightings of the vehicle can be reported to Crime Line on 32211.
