Rain wreaks havoc in Kwazulu Natal

Yesterday's heavy rainfall has wreaked havoc in parts of the province. Flood damage has been reported in Umhlanga, Durban, Westville and on the South Coast.

Numerous accidents have been reported, including a crash that claimed the life of an 11-year-old girl and her 15-year-old brother near Port Shepstone on the South Coast.

The SA Weather Service had recorded over 100mm of rain at Port Edward and Mt. Edgecombe by yesterday evening.

The rain has also led to a mudslide on the M4 between Umhlanga and La Lucia heading to the city centre, leading to the closure of one lane today.

The amaZulu and Ajax CT soccer match was abandoned at Moses Mabhida Stadium yesterday, with players wading ankle-deep in water on the field.

Durbanite Cherlaine Cook says the roads near the city's stadia were also water-logged.

"The road in front of Absa Stadium was flooded, there were two or three cars where you could see the water was already flowing into the cars. A taxi drove through the puddle and the cars were actually moving - so they were kind of lifting off the ground already," she said.

Meanwhile, the Co-operative Governance Department says it's still busy determining the total destruction caused to KZN by tropical storm Irina last week.

Spokesperson Vernon Mchunu says reconstruction will get underway after their teams complete their assessments in the affected areas.

Nearly 300 homes across the province, in areas including Durban, Empangeni and Richards Bay, were pummelled in the torrential downpour last weekend.

Mchunu says an official analysis with the total cost and figures should be ready soon. This report will then be presented to Cabinet on Wednesday.
