Woman killed in stampede in Fouriesburg

A woman was killed in a stampede as a result of riot action in Fouriesburg in the Free State this evening.

The cause of the incident and the series of events leading up to it remain unclear and will form the subject of a South African Police Force investigation.

Common cause information indicates that the woman had been part of a large crowd which had looted several stores owned by foreign nationals in the eastern Free State town.

In the melee she was knocked to the ground and she was trampled by others in the mob.

Netcare911 Paramedics arrived at the scene to find that the woman had sustained critical injuries and had sadly died as a result. No one else was reported injured in the incident.
