Two American tourists had to be airlifted off a mountain near Grabouw on Wednesday after getting lost while hiking, Western Cape's emergency medical services said.
Spokeswoman Keri Davids said the man and woman told friends they would be hiking the Palmiet Mountain trail on Tuesday, but they decided to tackle the Suicide Gorge trail instead.
She said they were reported as missing when they failed to return by 10pm on Tuesday.
A team of nine people were sent to look for the pair in the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve. They were eventually found at 2am, and were treated for hypothermia and dehydration.
The 12-hour rescue mission ended at 10am when they were picked up by helicopters and returned to safety.
