Western Cape law enforcement authorities on Monday set an ambitious target for their Easter road safety campaign.
They were briefing journalists about their plans for the upcoming Easter weekend.
Officials want to bring the road death toll down to zero.
Western Cape Transport MEC Robin Carlisle said their high visibility and no nonsense approach saw the Easter death toll fall from 28 in 2010, to 11 in 2011.
He said they aimed to reduce that figure to zero.
Officers will target drunk motorists and speedsters.
Carlisle said bus and taxi drivers would be tested for fatigue.
The MEC said his department would be focusing on programmes which proved to be successful during the 2011 Easter rush.
Traffic officers and police were not given the option of leave.
Meanwhile, Transport Minister S’bu Ndebele launched a nationwide Easter road safety campaign in March.
The minister said his department was committed to stopping the bloodshed associated with the Easter weekend.
