A near tragic incident was avoided this afternoon when an employee at a company in Roodepoort threatened to leap from a six storey building.
ER24 paramedics received a call out to assist with the situation and arrived at the scene to find the man sitting on the ledge of the building with his feet dangling over the edge.
An Advanced Life Support paramedic decided to join a group of people on the roof to try and convince the man to climb off of the ledge. It took some persuasion as the man was allegedly very reluctant to have anybody get close to him. After a while the paramedic managed to get close enough to the man by crawling on his stomach.
The paramedic then persuaded the man to reach to him in order to take a cigarette. The paramedic then managed to pull the man off of the ledge to safety. Paramedics then quickly stabilised the patient. The patient was later transported to a nearby medical facility for further care.
If it was not for the bravery and quick thinking of the on-scene paramedic things could have turned out very differently.
