The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many South Africans. To obtain critical weather information, the SAWDOS use voluntary weather observers. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe and informed by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the SAWDOS for publication on the Blog. The SAWDOS is a non-profit organization that renders a FREE COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICE.

Hamnet Report: 10 June 2012
Hamnet Weekly Report 10/06/2012
As we prepare this weekly report, the news has already started to drift in via various routes, avenues and ‘bush telegraph’ – the winter has arrived in earnest.
We have been following the cold front movement across the country with various webcam shots being shown on Facebook – some with a light sprinkling of snow!
Some Hamnet members were asked to report on heavy snow in the mountainous regions across the country but by Saturday morning we have had no reports of heavy snow in any of the well known passes that normally get closed – including the van Reenen pass.
This past week we also kept an eye on a tropical cyclone KUENA which developed over the Indian Ocean but fortunately moved North West and did not hold any danger to the mainland of Madagascar nor any of the East African countries. We were rather surprised to see a tropical storm developing so late in the season.
Heavy rain and flooding was reported from the Peninsula and reports of rain, hail and cold from all the way up the southern cape coast and into KZN.
Even Tiffendel, situated on the mountains slopes near Rhodes in the Eastern Cape, issued a 6 day snow forecast for those intrepid skiers who were prepared to venture into the mountains for some skiing. Well, the benefit of Tiffendel is, even if the fall is light but cold enough, they do have the necessary equipment to produce the white stuff!
Looking at the south Atlantic, there appears to be yet another front approaching, but it is still too far away to predict how severe it could be.
Next Saturday, the 16th of June is Youth Day, and the SARL will be hosting an open day at the NARC with Tony Voorveld, ZS6CCD in attendance and the shack open for some hands on amateur radio experience. At least 7 schools in our immediate area have been invited with their science teachers and principals to attend.
Keep warm and let’s keep an eye on the weather as winter has finally arrived!
Reporting for Hamnet, this is Francois Botha – ZS6BUU.
