A video surveillance system has been installed at a level crossing in Cape Town to monitor drivers breaking the law, the Western Cape transport department said on Thursday.
Department head Hector Eliott said the camera was installed at the White Road level crossing in Retreat recently and the first offenders could expect to receive summonses soon.
He said stiff fines would be imposed, starting at R500 for failure to stop at the railway.
“They may face arrest and charges of reckless or negligent driving in more serious cases, for example if the booms are ignored.”
The city planned to roll out the project to more crossings, including the Buttskop crossing, once the system was proved to be efficient in reducing recklessness.
Taxi driver Jacob Humphreys killed 10 children in 2010 when he overtook a row of cars at Buttskop, ignored safety signals and proceeded over the tracks.
He was given an effective 20 years in jail.
