The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many South Africans. To obtain critical weather information, the SAWDOS use voluntary weather observers. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe and informed by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the SAWDOS for publication on the Blog. The SAWDOS is a non-profit organization that renders a FREE COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICE.

Top canoeist dies of rabies

Durban - Underberg farmer and top canoeist Graeme Anderson has died of rabies, SABC radio news reported on Friday.
The state broadcaster said the machines keeping him alive had been switched off.
He contracted rabies from a stray dog.
Anderson, 29, has been in the ICU at a Pietermaritzburg hospital for about five weeks. A hundred and twenty-five rabies cases were reported in KwaZulu-Natal since the beginning of the year.
