The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many South Africans. To obtain critical weather information, the SAWDOS use voluntary weather observers. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe and informed by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the SAWDOS for publication on the Blog. The SAWDOS is a non-profit organization that renders a FREE COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICE.

Winter Solstice: Start of winter in South Africa
The first day of the Season of Winter. On this day (JUNE 21 in the southern hemisphere) the Sun is nearest north and the length of time between Sunrise and Sunset is the shortest of the year.
If you’re in the Southern Hemisphere, the June solstice is your signal to celebrate winter. For us, this solstice marks the shortest day of the year. Late dawns. Short days. Early sunsets. Long nights.
Enjoy celebrating the start of winter!!
