Johannesburg - Several people living in the low-lying areas of Nelson Mandela Bay were evacuated from their homes following heavy rain, the Eastern Cape municipality said on Saturday.
"About 20 people were evacuated [in Missionvale] on Friday," municipality spokesperson Kupido Baron.
"They spent the night at the ward councillor's offices."
Baron said residents should be prepared in case more people need to be evacuated.
The SA Weather Service reported that the rains were expected to continue throughout the province and that flood warnings still stood.
Snowfall had also been reported along the Drakensburg mountains.
The municipality announced earlier in the week that it was well-prepared for the wet weather.
Disaster management and emergency services have been placed on standby and boom-gates were erected to control the water levels in the Newtown Park area.
Officials were urging motorists to be careful on the roads.
