Mossel Bay: Two fires, one fatal

Mr Sekoeti lost all his belongings in the fire.

MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A man burned to death on Monday night in D'Almeida, after his shack took fire at around 19:30 in Alof Drive.

Mr Pieter Erasmus (38) was apparently sleeping when a candle in his room fell over. His aunt, Sarah Taute, who lives in a house on the same yard, says she woke up when neighbours were banging on her door. She saw the flames and Erasmus, who was struggling to get away from the smoke and fire.

The shack collapsed shortly after this and no-one could save him. "I tried to wet a blanket to throw it to him, but it was too late," says Taute.

Erasmus is divorced and has a 10-year-old daughter, who lives with her mom in Asla Park. He worked at a security company.

In another incident, on the same evening at around 22:45, another shack took fire in Olifant Street in KwaNonqaba.
The owner of the shack, Mr Steven Sekoeti (39), was not at home.

He returned later the evening and found all his belongings, including his documents and money, in ashes.
