CAPE TOWN - South Africans will not have to endure load shedding for the rest of winter, Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba said on Friday.
His announcement comes as power utility Eskom warns that the electricity grid is under strain.
But Gigaba is confident there will be no rolling blackouts.
“Eskom is going to continue doing everything in their power to keep the lights on. We knew when the winter period started that there would come moments when we would need to draw on our reserves to ensure that we keep the lights on.”
Meanwhile, Eskom said engineers are doing their best to get Koeberg's Unit1 up and running.
On Wednesday evening, it was shut down automatically following an electrical fault on the non-nuclear side of the structure.
Electricity supply has been under pressure since then.
Eskom's Hillary Joffe said they hope everything will be back to normal soon.
“I don’t think any power utility could ever give guarantees, but we are busy returning the unit to service. It takes a little while and they [technicians] obviously do lots of checks as they do it [repair work].”
