9 year old boy went missing in Elsieskraal River
A 9 year old boy went missing on Wednesday evening in the Elsieskraal River in Thornton whilst playing with his friend alongside the river throwing logs in the stream whereafter he slipped and was carried away by the current.
At 18:11 on Wednesday, 15 August 2012 the City’s Emergency Services was alerted of the incident and dispatched the City’s Fire & Rescue Services and the METRO Emergency Medical Services of the Western Cape Government to the scene of the incident.
The paramedics arrived within minutes at approximately 18:20 and conducted a search and rescue mission with a watercraft and on foot.
The extent of the Elsieskraal was searched until the river mouth meets the Black River in Athlone adjacent to the N2 highway.
The search and rescue mission was terminated after 02:00 this morning due to the strong current, persistent heavy downpour of rain and poor visibility.
The rescue teams will resume the search mission at first daylight in attempt to find the body of the 9 year old boy.
The City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre has made arrangements that the family, teachers and fellow learners be provided with emergency psychosocial trauma counseling.
It is believed that the boy has drowned and the South African Police Services (SAPS) will investigate the cause of the drowning, however it appears that there were no foul play suspected at this stage.
