Army assisting stranded motorists

The army and disaster management teams are rescuing people stuck on the snowed-in R617 between Kokstad and Swartberg.

The KZN Co-operative Governance Department's Lennox Mabaso says they have dispatched teams to help free people in over 40 vehicles there.

He says while they are doing everything possible to assist, it's difficult to say when everyone will be assisted in the southern parts of the province.

He has urged motorists to delay travel if possible.

Meanwhile, scores of motorists trapped on Van Reenen's Pass and near the Mooi River Toll Plaza have called into our News and Views line.

They say in some places the snow is up to a metre thick.

"We have been stuck in the snow since 11pm last night. We're just hoping and praying that they will come and save us soon," said one motorist.

"It's taken us nine-and-a-half hours to get from Newcastle to Durban. We're trapped now, there are trucks everywhere. It's impossible to get through, it's not even worth trying today - anywhere near that part of the Midlands," added another listener.

"I tried to stop my vehicle, and it looks like my brakes have frozen in. Whatever rain is falling is actually freezing on the roads, and making them impassable."
