The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many South Africans. To obtain critical weather information, the SAWDOS use voluntary weather observers. GEORGE NEWS - Following a masterful and daring rip current rescue in January, Leadership Coach and Volunteer NSRI Rescue Swimmer Torsten Henschel from Wilderness, has been nominated as one of 16 semi-finalists in the Centrum Guardian Project 2012.
Henschel rescued a 15-year-old boy from Die Bult High School in George, who was swept off his feet while swimming in Sedgefield. Henschel says it was all in a day's work. "When I swim, I know my NSRI mates are coming with the boat, and boy was I relieved to see that rescue boat. The sea was not kind."
Henschel was quite flabbergasted by the local support shown for his nomination as a finalist in the Centrum Guardian Project 2012. Some VIPs and local beauties drove out especially to Leentjiesklip in Wilderness to wish him well.
NSRI is the only Emergency response and rescue service manned entirely by unpaid volunteers up for nomination this year. Hennie Niehaus, Wilderness Station Commander says Station 23 was placed second last year to deserved Eden Fire fighter, Deon van Wyk. "Our aim is to win in 2012 and bring the trophy back to the Garden Route!
"Progress to the final four and the ultimate winner is governed by votes. NSRI is a non-profit organisation and is constantly striving to raise funds. A cash prize of R55 000 is on offer, and should Torsten receive the votes and ultimately the first prize, this money will be used at the Wilderness Station to replace the crumbling floor. There are two rounds of voting and the competition is stiff, so we trust and encourage you to vote and ask that you get your family and colleagues to do the same!"
Henschel's story will be shown on SABC 3 tonight at 22:10 in episode 5 of a 13-week documentary drama series called Centrum Guardians 2012, hosted by Ruda Landman, renowned television personality and journalist.
To vote for Henschel, SMS "STAMINA" to 33123. SMSs are charged at R1,50 and free SMSs don't apply. To vote online visit www.centrumguardian.com.
The Centrum Guardian Project recognises and rewards acts of courage and self-sacrifice by those who operate in the emergency services industry.
