Hazmat team declares beached tanks safe

Cape Town - The five containers torn off the Chinese ship Anguan Gjing, which was sailing from Durban to Nigeria in heavy seas on 17 July have finally been opened by a hazardous materials team, says Kevin Kelly of Xtreme Projects.

The five tanks, spread out on beaches between St Francis Bay and the Gamtoos River mouth, were found to be empty and safe to salvage.

The containers were suspected of potentially containing dangerous substances.

Xtreme Projects has been contracted by the owners under the authority of South African Maritime Safety Authority to survey and salvage the tanks.

The salvage attempt will be made on the next spring tide of 4 August, provided weather conditions allow the operation, otherwise they will try again on 19 August.
