Motorist killed by train in Stanger

A man has died after the car he was traveling in was hit by a train near Stanger on the North Coast.

Reports from the scene at eTete suggest the motorist tried to drive across a level crossing when the train slammed into his vehicle about an hour ago.

Emergency personnel at the scene say the R102, which crosses the train tracks, is littered with debris from the wreckage.

Netcare911's Chris Botha says the man tragically died on scene.

"The train struck the vehicle on the side, splitting the car in two and breaking parts of the vehicle off.

"We arrived on scene here and unfortunately the driver had sustained very, very critical injuries."

Railway officials as well as the police are on scene. They are expected to investigate the incident.
