Rescue teams are attempting to reach motorists who have been stuck in the snow in KZN overnight.

The Road Traffic Inspectorate says around 20 cars, two buses as well as emergency vehicles have been trapped on treacherous roads since late yesterday.

The Kokstad area was particularly badly affected.

The Inspectorate has told Newswatch that it has closed the N3 from Tweedie to Van Reenen's Pass.

Amajuba Pass is also closed.

They have also appealed to motorists to stay off the R617 near Franklin and Swartberg, the R612 near Underberg and the R56 from Kokstad to Matatiele. Click here for a full list of roads affected by snow.

Meanwhile, ER24's Vanessa Jackson says paramedics have also gotten stuck in the Midlands.

"Light motor vehicles, delivery vehicles, there were some ambulances stuck there. Obviously our response car, even police rescue vehicles were stuck as well.

"We are waiting for heavy rescue to come and assist with moving those vehicles from the roads. As far as we know, the army was dispatched so they will come and try and assist there as well," she said.

The N3 Toll Concession's Andy Visser says they have experienced snow from Hilton right into the Free State.

She says they've got management plans in place to deal with the situation.

"In places [the snow] was certainly knee deep, probably about half a metre. In other areas it has been slightly less.

"But we have our route services out, just to continue to monitor the road, reporting to our control centre so we are on high alert from the minute that we are notified of snowfall potential," she said.
