Thunderstorms, lightning, hail and heavy rain has been reported around the province.
The weather office says a storm passed through inland areas earlier in the afternoon and was headed towards the sea by late afternoon.
Motorists in Pietermaritzburg and in nearby Eston have reported lightning, hail and heavy rain. Hail fell in areas from Pinetown, Hillcrest, the Durban city centre and south of Durban to Amanzimtoti.
Listeners have also reported incidents of flooding in Chatsworth.

Meanwhile, the weather office says a cold front has hit the province and is expected to last until Wednesday.
The forecast for this afternoon says snow is expected over the southwestern high ground this evening until tomorrow.
