CAPE TOWN – Officials are on hand to assist the owners of a French ship that was burning off the coast of Walvis Bay, Namibian police confirmed on Tuesday.
Last week, more than 50 crew members were evacuated from the Chamarel after a fire was reported on the vessel.
Most of the crew members were South African.
The vessel is owned by France Telecom.
The company is responsible for laying undersea fibre-optic cables.
Deputy Police Commissioner Edwin Kanguatjivi said the company has employed security officials to guard the ship.
He said police were called to the area after a chain that holds containers was stolen off the ship.
Kanguatjivi said one person was arrested and the chain was recovered.
Namibian maritime officials are monitoring the vessel.
