JOHANNESBURG - The South African Medical Association (Sama)’s Public Sector Committee on Tuesday said power outages at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital were costing lives.
Earlier on Tuesday, Health Department spokesperson Simon Zwane denied there was a problem at the Soweto hospital.
This despite photographs of doctors using headlamps and cellphone lights emerged during a C-section procedure on Friday.
Zwane said the photos were creating a false impression of the hospital's problems.
But Sama spokesperson Phopi Ramathuba said these incidents were happening and various hospitals.
“We have seen incidents were doctors have had to improvise to save lives.”
Friday’s incident was confirmed by two doctors at the hospital.
