HAMNET Weekly Report 16/09/2012.
It is gratifying to know that the value of amateur radio during and after emergencies is valued by authorities and manufacturers of equipment.
You may recall the massive flooding in Thailand toward the end of last year which caused millions of rand worth of damage and also caused the loss of the main Radio Society of Thailand’s operational radio room.
The manufacturers of Yaesu on learning of their loss were very gracious in donating a pair of FT2000D transceivers as well as a cheque to recoup some other losses. The radio room was totally submerged and we recall also that some of the outlying areas operators also lost equipment during the flooding.
Making the equipment presentation was the Yaesu Musen Company’s Executive Vice President for North America, Dennis Motchenbacher, K7BV, who travelled to Thailand for the occasion.
RAST President, Joe Semjang, HS2JFW expressed his thanks to Yeasu for the generous support and that the new equipment will go a long way to help amateur radio in Region 3.
Locally, a Wilderness Search and rescue exercise is being planned to take place Nuweberg, which is located near Grabouw. The date still needs to be announced but the last week of October of early November seems to be the likely dates.
Remaining in the Western Cape, Hamnet W/Cape are looking for a few volunteers to assist with the Vivobarefoot Matroosberg Trial Challenge on Saturday the 29th of September.
One base communicator and about 5 – 4X4 operators with low range capabilities are required for this exercise.
Reporting for Hamnet, this is Francois Botha – ZS6BUU.
