HAMNET Bulletin: October 2012

IN THE BULLETIN TODAY
AMATEUR RADIO EQUIPMENT - ROADBLOCKS
NEW – HAMNET WEB SITE

HAMNET conforms to and abides by the IARU discipline of engaging in emergency communication locally and worldwide during and after disasters as internationally Amateur Radio is regarded as a National Resource!

HAMNET, as a group of volunteers, supports Disaster Risk Management in South Africa and serves on the sub committee of the South African Search & Rescue Organisation – SASAR!

It is recommended that when becoming a member of HAMNET, you also become an SARL member to abide by and conform to the IARU International and HAMNET rules regarding emergency communication!

All HAMNET information is available on www.hamnet.co.za alternatively www.sarl.org.za just follow the link!  Weekly updates are supplied to Amateur Radio Today on Sunday’s and a monthly bulletin is supplied to members and available on the SARL website and as a podcast!

You can also follow us on Facebook    and TwitterTwitter_newbird_blue

VEHICLE EQUIPMENT AND ROADBLOCKS

It has been brought to our attention that on occasions, either Hamnet members or normal radio enthusiasts have had a bit of an altercation with roadblocks on our national roads.

Members of SAPS or Provincial Police have been rather ‘difficult’ in their conversations and demanding documentation and authority to ‘have radios in your car’.

I will be discussing this issue with the SAPS at our SASAR conference which is taking place this month – and if necessary I will take it further up the line of authority with SAPS to ensure we get clearance on this issue!

In the mean time, myself having been on the road for many years, the safest scenario is to have a certified copy of your current ICASA licence with you and if available your original license to operate amateur radio.

Please also ensure that your call sign, as it appears in your certificate, is visible on your mobile equipment.

What we also suggest – especially for those constantly on the road with equipment in their vehicles; have a copy of Regulation 308 A in your possession to show any official that ‘land mobile vehicles’ are allowed to carry radio equipment and are exempt from the restrictions related to cell phones.

We suggest you have a clearly marked envelope in your cubby hole specifically designed to carry all the documentation needed to establish your credentials!

Cell phones are totally another issue so please do not hold your hand held in your hand when driving – this is courting disaster as no official will know the difference between a cell phone and a two way radio!

In a recent document sent to me by Henry Riley, ZS6HKR, it clearly states that land mobile vehicles with equipment attached to the vehicle are exempt from any restriction when operating from your vehicle.

Should you as a Hamnet member or a normal mobile enthusiast need a copy of Regulation 308 A, please e-mail me at jfbotha@iburst.co.za or at zs6buu@gmail.com and I will forward it to you.

It is also freely available from the Automobile Association!

NEW – HAMNET WEBSITE

Although HAMNET for many years has had a registered web Domain, it has finally, thanks to the efforts of Dawid Conradie ZR6DCH, seen the light.

Although still very much in its developmental stage, the foundation has been laid and will only flourish in the weeks and month’s ahead!

As of today the 1st of October, Hamnet now finally has its own official website at www.hamnet.co.za

This website fills the gap between the official SARL website and the Facebook site that has become a popular site especially when we work closely together with the SAWDOS weather Facebook site.

A number of links have already been included into the website such as a link to the SARL website as well as links to GEM, the Global Emergency Communications Website and many other sites that are of interest to us when it comes to weather, cyclones and general disaster information around the world.

We also included the new Hamnet logos which can be downloaded for those who need them for letterheads or the development of badges etc.

Basically much of what is in the SARL website is also in the Hamnet website but we updated various items due to changed circumstances over the years and we will keep on updating the website until it is a true reflection of our commitment to the community.

Dawie will be responsible for the website for the immediate future and as ideas and suggestions are forthcoming, we will change and adapt the site to meet all our needs.

GENERAL

Schools across the country closed on Friday for the final break before the year end exams that start in October.

We do not anticipate too much traffic on the roads as the price of petrol is beginning to bite and it probably is to short a period before the December holiday period!

Schools reopen on the 8th and 9th of October depending on your location!
