Durban - A man drowned when he was swept into the sea at an Amanzimtoti beach, on the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday, paramedics said.
His wife told paramedics that she and her husband were sitting on the beach when a wave swept them both into the water, Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said.
The couple were holiday makers from Pretoria.
“She recalls him saying 'just crawl out' when a second wave pulled them back into the water. She managed to crawl on her hands and knees to safety, but her elderly husband collapsed,” said Botha.
Lifeguards managed to pull the man out of the water but he was already dead.
