The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many South Africans. To obtain critical weather information, the SAWDOS use voluntary weather observers. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe and informed by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the SAWDOS for publication on the Blog. The SAWDOS is a non-profit organization that renders a FREE COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICE.

SEA RESCUE – EASTERN CAPE – 03rd, 04th and 05th October, 2012. 4 incidents
At 18h00 on Wednesday, 03rd October, NSRI Jeffreys Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated following reports of a jet-skier in difficulty 2 kilometers from Main Beach.
NSRI Jeffreys Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crew responded to the scene where they found a jet-skier in the surf line in difficulty after his jet-ski suffered mechanical failure.
The adult man was assisted to recover his jet-ski out of the surf and NSRI towed the jet-ski to main beach using the NSRI Quad Bike and assisted the man to get a mechanic to have the jet-ski repaired.
No one was injured and no further assistance was required.
At St Francis Bay on Thursday, 04th October, NSRI St Francis Bay Volunteer duty crew launched their sea rescue craft Spirit of St Francis II and proceeded to the Chokka fishing boat Silver Arrow off-shore of St Francis Bay where they treated a fisherman aged in his 60's for a severe asthma attack.
The patient was brought to shore by NSRI and he was transported to hospital by 24/7 ambulance services in a serious but stable condition.
Also at St Francis Bay, on Friday, 05th October, NSRI St Francis Bay volunteer duty crew launched their sea rescue craft Spirit of St Francis II to rendezvous with the Chokka fishing boat Sea Lion off-shore of Monsters Hoek where they treated a man aged in his 30's for a stomach ailment.
During the call the NSRI St Francis Bay volunteers were sent to also treat a man suffering Hemoptysis (coughing up blood) on the Chokka fishing boat Dermar.
Both patients were brought to shore onboard the NSRI sea rescue craft and both were transported to hospital in stable conditions by 24/7 ambulance services.
