SEA RESCUE – West Coast – Saturday, 27th October, 2012. Sailor casualty evacuated to hospital

Darius van Niekerk, NSRI Mykonos station commander, said:

At 16h32 (Saturday, 27th October) NSRI Mykonos volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority following a request for medical assistance from the container ship NILE DUTCH SHANG, sailing from Cape Town to Congo, reporting a crewman onboard injured onboard after reportedly falling off a container on the ships deck.

Our NSRI Mykonos volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched our sea rescue craft Spirit of Freemasonry accompanied by a South African Paramedic Services paramedic and responded to rendezvous with the ship 15 nautical miles off-shore.

On arrival on-scene NSRI sea rescue crew and the South African Paramedic Services paramedic boarded the ship and stabilized the patient who was found suffering a fractured right femur and an injured right knee.

Once stabilized the patient was loaded and secured into a Stokes basket stretcher and transferred, using high angle rope technique, onto our sea rescue craft and transported to shore.

The patient, a 41 year old male, from the Philippines, was transported to hospital by a South African Paramedic Services ambulance in a stable but serious condition."
