Police rescued a four-month-old baby who had been left alone in a car parked in the sun in Springs, Ekurhuleni on Wednesday, paramedics said.
A passerby noticed the child in the car in a parking lot and called the police, Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said.
"[They] had to break the window to remove the child," said Botha.
Paramedics were called and found the baby in a serious condition due to the severe heat.
"After rehydrating the infant, we transported her to a nearby hospital."
Police spokesman Captain Johannes Ramphora said the child's mother was arrested and would face a charge of child neglect.
