The effects of severe weather are felt every year by many South Africans. To obtain critical weather information, the SAWDOS use voluntary weather observers. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe and informed by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the SAWDOS for publication on the Blog. The SAWDOS is a non-profit organization that renders a FREE COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICE.

43 people homeless in Cape Town after fires wreaks havoc
Three fires that occurred in Cape Town left 43 persons homeless in Cape Town in the following areas:
STRAND: At 17:55 on Friday, 09 November 2012 a fire destroyed three backyard dwellings at 185 Petunia Street, Broadlands Park near Strand. The fire resulted in the displacement of 8 adults, 6 children and 2 babies.
LOTUS RIVER: A fire that occurred at 13:01 on Saturday, 10 November 2012 gutted six informal structures at the Egoli Informal Settlement, c/o Klip and Boundary Road (Schaapkraal farmlands) in Lotus River. As a result 13 adults and 9 children were left displaced.
PARKWOOD ESTATE: One informal dwelling that was situated on a property at the c/o Blackbird Avenue and Walmer Road in Parkwood Estate was destroyed by fire at 15:56 on Saturday, 10 November 2012 that resulted in 5 people left homeless.
The City’s disaster response teams assisted the fire victims with food parcels, clothing, blankets and building material.
The cause of the fires has not been established and the incidents will be investigated.
