City’s disaster response teams assists 250 people after fires wreaks havoc
The City’s disaster response teams are assisting 250 people that are left homeless after two fires wreaked havoc during the early hours of this morning.
SEAWINDS: At 03:25 on Saturday, 24 November 2012 a fire gutted 60 informal structures at the Overcome Heights Informal Settlement in Seawinds. The fire caused devastation and 240 people are left homeless. The fire also damaged the overhead electricity infrastructure that caused a interruption in the power supply – the technicians are in the process of restoring the service in the area.
MILNERTON: Another fire occurred at 04:21 on Saturday, 24 November 2012 that destroyed six shacks at the Doornbach Informal Settlement near Milnerton. The fire resulted in the displacement of 10 people.
No persons sustained any injuries in both fire incidents.
The City’s disaster response teams are on the scene assisting the fire victims with food parcels, hot meals, clothing, blankets and building material.
At this stage it is unclear what caused these fires – however the authorities will probe an investigation.
