Superstorm Sandy death toll at 121 in North-Eastern US
Superstorm Sandy killed at least 121 people, including 43 in New York, when it devastated the north-eastern United States in late October, New York police said on Monday.
One 77-year-old man died on Sunday from injuries suffered when Sandy hit Rockaway, Queens, on October 29. Police also discovered one more body during clean-up operations the same day on Staten Island, bringing the total death toll in New York to 43.
The two New York City boroughs' residential areas along the Atlantic seashores suffered major destruction from the storm.
Government officials in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut estimated property and economic damages caused by Sandy at 50 billion dollars. Sandy caused widespread flooding and power outages, affecting millions.
