SEA RESCUE – DURBAN – Sunday, 06th January, 2012. Man dies after truck plunges into harbour
On Sunday, 06th January, at 14h00, NSRI Durban volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority following reports of a container truck plunged into the harbour at the Port of Durban 'B-Shed'.
Clifford Ireland, NSRI Durban station commander, said:
Whilst we were returning to the base from a stand-by at Inanda with the sea rescue vehicle we got a call at approximately 14H00 from Port control advising that a container truck had gone into the harbour at B shed in Durban's Port.
We diverted to assist and called the SAPS Search & Rescue to confirm that they were responding which they confirmed to us that they were. On arrival on scene the SAPS divers dived and recovered the driver of the truck from under water. He appears to be a local male aged in his mid twenties. The man has been confirmed to be deceased by paramedics and his body has been handed into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services.
Police are now in the process of recovering the truck and have opened an inquest docket which will also investigate the cause of the incident.
