JOHANNESBURG - There are reports of flooding in large parts of the Johannesburg CBD and surrounding areas on Monday afternoon.

Traffic is moving slowly along all major routes in and out of the city centre.
A woman, who was driving in Newtown, said the water was rising fast.

“There’s a dip at Miriam Makeba Road and the water has risen as high as my window. My car could go through the water, but other people’s cars are getting stuck and people are making U-turns there, which is causing havoc.”

Weather forecaster Edwin Thema said heavy thunderstorms have been moving across Johannesburg from the south.

“We have a line of thunder storms moving into Johannesburg’s city centre and moving further up north into the East Rand. All these showers will be moving further north, as far as Pretoria, by this evening.”

He said storms should not last more than an hour before moving on.
