Khayelitsha fires displaces over 250 people overnight


At 23:03 last night [Monday, 04 February 2013] a fire destroyed 5 shacks at Emsindweni Informal Settlement off Khawuleza Road in Khayelitsha that left 11 persons displaced. The fire destroyed all the personal belongings of the households. It is suspected that the fire was caused by an electrical fault.

Another fire occurred at 23:16 last night [Monday, 04 February 2013] at Site B, UT Section, Khayelitsha. It is estimated that the blaze destroyed 50 shacks in the area leaving nearly 250 people homeless. The circumstances regarding the blaze are not known.

During the course of the day the City’s disaster response teams will assist the fire victims with the supply of food parcels, blankets, baby packs; clothing; and building material.

No persons sustained any injuries or died as a result of these fires.
