SEA RESCUE – DURBAN – Saturday, 02 March, 2013. 2 spear-fishermen found safe after search


Clifford Ireland, NSRI Durban station commander, said:

"On Saturday, 02 March, at 10h03, NSRI Durban volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated following reports of 2 local spear-fishermen missing while spear-fishing off-shore of the Green Point Lighthouse, Scottburgh, on the South Coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal.

"Our NSRI Durban volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched our sea rescue craft MEGAN II and our NSRI rescue vehicle towed our sea rescue craft SPIRIT OF SVITZER to be launched from the scene and the Police Search and Rescue responded.

"It was confirmed that the 2 spear-fishermen, an 18 year old and a 50 year old, locals, were spearfishing from their boat SHARKY, when they went missing at approximately 09h20. The crewman on the boat had initiated a search and another private boat SEA HUNTER, that was in the area at the time, had joined in a search.

"Prior to NSRI's arrival on-scene the two men were located and recovered from the sea by the private boat SEA HUNTER at 11h15. They were reported to not be injured and were brought safely ashore and no further assistance was required.

"NSRI resources responding to the scene were stood down to return to base.

"It is reported that they had departed from Rocky Bay at 08h00 and went into the water, off Clansthal to spear-fish at 09h00, and went missing at approximately 09h20. It has not been established by NSRI what caused the two men to go missing."
