Durban - A hailstorm damaged 50 houses, caused trees to be uprooted and a power failure in eMondlo, northern KwaZulu-Natal, the mayor of AbaQulusi municipality said on Wednesday.
"There was a hailstorm at about 16:00 on Tuesday. Some of the houses were completely destroyed and others were left without a roof," Mayor Patience Khaba said.
Authorities were assessing the damage with the department of co-operative governance.
"Families that have lost their homes have been placed in temporary shelter while we wait for the assistance from the department of human settlements," she said.
The municipality was working on restoring power in the area.
At the weekend, five people went missing when a storm flooded houses in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands areas of uMsinga and uMvoti on New Year's Eve.
