Officials in Port St John’s on Tuesday said at least eight people were killed by sharks at the town's popular beach since 2004.
In a latest incident, a man died after he was attack by a shark at the Second Beach.
The 25-year-old was swimming with his friends and other bathers at the time of the incident.
In the past, the council was criticised for failing to deal with the attacks.
But Mayor Mnyamezeli Mangqo said they are trying to address the problem.
“As a long-term plan, we are trying to lobby the national and provincial government so that they can assist the municipality in ensuring that the beaches are safe. However, that process will be entirely dependent on the scientific research that is being undertaken now,” he added.
