Opvolg: Onsekerheid oor brief in bottel

Die brief lees: "We on the Pacific ocean 1970 0’c from South West of America - our boat have been swallowed in by a huge strong gulf. We were a voyage of 27 and now only 3 remain. We with out food and water and about to die."

Message from the sea probably a hoax

GEORGE NUUS - A bottle with a message, washed out by the sea at Wilderness during December last year, could be the work of children. News about the find immediately spread through the region, but excitement quickly died down once the bottle had been investigated.

Mr Desmond Mesane from Kleinkrantz, Wilderness took his dog for a walk on the beach on Sunday 11 December, when he found a bottle washed out on the beach and sealed with red silicone around the top. In it was a letter.

When he got home, he broke the seal and carefully took out the letter which read: "We on the Pacific ocean 1970 0’c from South West of America - our boat have been swallowed in by a huge strong gulf. We were a voyage of 27 and now only 3 remain.

We with out food and water and about to die."

Craig Lambinon, spokesperson of the NSRI, says they believe that the bottle was placed on the beach by children, and that the letter was written by them too.

"The finder of the bottle gave it to us, but after investigation we han-ded it back to him," said Lambinon.
